Gears! Gears! Gears!® Beginner's Building Set Review
I was surprised to read bad reviews on this toy. The pieces are durable hard plastic, and the only minus is that the creator is limited to either linear or right angle based creations. Creations can fall apart if they are played with too aggressively. Force and gravity are realities with anything- Otherwise, it is helpful in illustrating the concept of gear mechanisms. The bright contrasting colors are fun and good for seeing the relationship of one gear to another (every other gear moves in the opposite direction- a novel concept for a child!) Kids can build across, up and over. I recommend this toy for explorative play as well as guided instruction for teaching simple machine concepts. Our son played with it alot as a toddler, and is now using it again for reinforcement in learning about the wheel and axle/ simple machines. With a little creativity, other objects can be incorporated to see how gears fit in every day life. Our set came from a yard sale, and didn't come with a guide book, so everything we have built from it has come from our own imaginations :)

Fun and interesting for younger kids. - SAHM of 3 under 5 -
I bought this for my 3 year old for his birthday, and he and his older brother have had a lot of fun with it. Not only that, but every adult who comes in contact with it can't help but play with it too.

It's fun for beginners. My 2.5 yo son just started to enjoy his creations with these gears. But I wish there were more different types of connectors to make more complicated structures.

I saw this advertised in a children's science catalog and instantly thought it would be a perfect learning experience for my 4 year old and 2 year old grandchildren. It was more reasonably priced on Amazon... It was a BIG HIT on Christmas Day. The grandchildren AND adults couldn't stop playing with these gears!
